Definitely try to get an inhome pet sitter. Trustedhousesitter.com is amazing. I have been sitting with them for 4 years now, and my normal job is running a rescue shelter, farm sanctuary, and previously a vet clinic in Vietnam, so there are sitters like me out there who can stay at someone's home and care for them in the same routine. I travel around the world most of the year doing this, taking in other people's pets as my own family and caring for them in the exact way they parents do. I would look into the site. Some of the sitters are retired vets or vet techs as well. It's worth a try. You don;t even pay them. It is just an exchange for housing. So sorry you had such an awful boarding experience!
